Are photographers artists, or is the camera the real artist?
I think the other answers have captured the distinction that cameras are only tools, and that the artist is the mind behind the tool. I would like to also address a common misconception that I think is behind the question.
Because cameras capture what is in front of them with the click of a button, it’s very tempting to think that there is no artistry involved. It’s just pointing and clicking, right? I used to think this as well. I thought it was more about finding the right object to photograph, and that anyone with a camera could end up with basically the same result.
The reality is that the artistry is in knowing where to place the camera, the lens to use, the focus to use, how to compose the shot, how to pose any models, how to light the shot, and how to get a message across through all of these elements.
